Alchemie Solutions, Inc. (“Alchemie,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is an educational technology company headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA. We build accessible, multisensory interactive digital tools for STEM education, with a particular focus on supporting students who are blind or have low vision.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information in connection with our products and services. By using any Alchemie product, including those detailed in Section 2 below, you agree to the practices described here.
Alchemie operates three distinct product lines, each with a different user relationship and data profile:
We are committed to collecting the minimum information necessary to operate our products. The information we collect differs by product.
When students use Alchemie’s interactive tools through publisher platforms (e.g., WileyPLUS via Learnosity), Alchemie does not collect any personally identifiable information through this offering. We do not know the identity of individual students, what courses they are enrolled in, or which institutions are using our tools. We do not use tracking cookies, employ third-party analytics SDKs, or collect any demographic information in connection with these tools. We collect only telemetry data (e.g., mini-timestamps and interaction logs) for the sole purpose of identifying and resolving software bugs and ensuring product quality.
When you create a Piph Author account, we collect the following personal data:
If you purchase Mechanisms 2.0, we collect the following personal data:
Mechanisms 2.0 collects detailed, granular interaction data as students work through chemistry mechanism puzzles, including the sequence of moves, hints used, and how students progress through each problem. However, this data is associated only with anonymous, system-generated unique identifiers (UIDs) created by Firebase. Alchemie has no technical capability to connect these UIDs with individually identified students. Aggregated, de-identified data may be made available to educational researchers and the broader research community. Any research conducted using Mechanisms interaction data that associates data with a specific course, institution, or student cohort is conducted only under an approved Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol, with appropriate informed consent and data governance in place.
When you visit our website at alchem.ie, we may automatically collect certain personal data, including the following:
We use the information we collect only for the following purposes:
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use student data for any purpose other than delivering our educational services.
Alchemie uses a limited number of carefully selected third-party services to operate its products, including the following:
Alchemie uses artificial intelligence in the following ways: (1) to generate alternative text descriptions for complex scientific figures and structures submitted through Piph Author and our learning tools, making scientific content accessible to users who rely on screen readers; and (2) to power Piph, an AI-powered learning assistant embedded in our accessible learning tools that provides guiding questions, encouragement, and feedback to students.
When a scientific figure is submitted for alt text generation, the figure content is sent to the Anthropic Claude API. The API returns a text description, which is delivered to the user. The figure content is not retained by Anthropic after processing.
Per Anthropic’s API usage policy, inputs submitted via the API are not used to train or fine-tune Anthropic’s models. No personal or institutional data is embedded in or retained by the AI model.
AI-powered alt text generation is integral to the accessibility of Alchemie’s products and cannot be disabled, as it provides the core accessibility function for users who are blind or have low vision.
Alchemie is committed to protecting student privacy. Because Alchemie does not have access to student education records and cannot identify individual students using its tools, Alchemie is not subject to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Student access to our SaaS learning tools is managed by the educational institution and its platform partners (e.g., Learnosity, WileyPLUS), and any student education records remain under the institution’s control.
For Mechanisms 2.0, interaction data is associated only with anonymous, system-generated UIDs. Alchemie has no technical means to associate this data with an identified student, and therefore this data does not constitute an “education record” under FERPA.
Alchemie does not sell, share, or use student interaction data for advertising, marketing, or any non-educational purpose. Please also note that our products and services are not directed to children under the age of 13. Alchemie does not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information promptly. If you believe that a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, please contact us at privacy@alchem.ie.designed for use by higher-education students and faculty.
Alchemie’s research and development activities are supported in part by federal grants from government agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Institute of Education Sciences of the Department of Education (ED/IES), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). Any research involving human subjects data collected in connection with federally funded projects is conducted in accordance with applicable federal regulations and under approved Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols. De-identified research data may be shared with funding agencies or the broader research community as required by grant terms or open-data policies.
We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to provide our services or as required by law.
To request deletion of your data, contact us at privacy@alchem.ie.
Alchemie is subject to the laws and regulations of the United States. Our services are primarily offered in the United States. We do not intentionally collect data from individuals located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or China, and we do not monitor the behavior of individuals in those jurisdictions.

You may unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time by using the “unsubscribe” link in any email or by contacting us directly. Alchemie takes the security of your information seriously. We implement and maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the nature of the information we handle, including:
In the event of a data breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you and applicable authorities as required by law.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our products, practices, or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of this document and flag this update on our website. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of our products after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
