Our Story

From a chemistry classroom in Detroit to accessible STEM tools used across the country, this is how Alchemie came to be.

Alchemie builds accessible STEM infrastructure — the only born-accessible STEM visualization tools that work across K-12 and higher education. Our mission is to provide experiential and accessible learning through game-inspired interactives, revolutionizing education through AI-powered solutions and promoting inclusivity to set the stage for a brighter, more accessible future of learning for all students.

Julia Winter, CEO of Alchemie, conducting a chemistry lab in her old classroom with students.

Co-founder and CEO Julia Winter spent 25 years teaching college-level chemistry at Detroit Country Day School. After implementing a successful summer school program, the award-winning educator began looking for ways to expand her face-to-face pedagogy to a more scalable digital format.

In 2018, at a chemistry education conference, a PhD chemist told Julia and her team that they had "completely missed the boat on accessibility." That conversation changed everything.

"We want to re-imagine the possibilities for creating digital learning experiences. Our goal is to build assistive technology into learning tools as a key feature, not as an afterthought."

Joe Engalan (CTO) brings a game developer's perspective, using the principle of "learning through failure" (really formative feedback) to teach tough concepts.

Carl Rundell (COO) ensures our vision translates into sustainable, scalable solutions for schools and universities.
