1.  Who We Are

Alchemie Solutions, Inc. (“Alchemie,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is an educational technology company headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA. We build accessible, multisensory interactive digital tools for STEM education, with a particular focus on supporting students who are blind or have low vision.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information in connection with our products and services. By using any Alchemie product, you agree to the practices described here.

2.  Our Products

Alchemie operates two distinct products, each with a different user relationship and data profile:

Piph Author (Faculty Tool) is used by faculty and instructors, can be accessed directly at alchem.ie/piph by a direct commercial subscription. Alchemie Learning (student tool) is used by students via institutional platforms via Content2Classroom (C2C) or the LMS, and is institutional or managed by the institution and C2C.

3.  What We Collect

We are committed to collecting the minimum information necessary to operate our products. The information we collect differs by product.

3.1  Piph Author (Faculty Tool)

The following information is collected due to the provided reason. Email address used to create your Alchemie account due to account creation, authentication, and service communications. Payment information including billing details, process entirely by Stripe due to subscription management - Alchemie never stores card data. Figure content including scientific figures submitted for alt text generation due to processing via AI to generate alt text but is not retained after processing. Telemetry data which is anonymous usage and error data within Firebase for qualitfy assurance and bug resolution only, no PII is included.

What we do not collect: We do not collect IP addresses, use tracking cookies, employ third-party analytics SDKs, or collect any demographic information.

3.2  Alchemie Learning (Student Tool via Institutions)

Alchemie does not collect personally identifiable information from students using our learning tools. Student access and data are managed by the institution and our platform partner, Content2Classroom (C2C). Any student data processed in connection with our learning tools is subject to the institution’s own privacy policies and data governance practices, as well as C2C’s privacy terms.

We collect anonymous, interaction-level data — such as sequences of student moves within chemistry mechanisms — that is not associated with any student account, course, institution, or identifiable individual. This anonymous interaction data is used to improve our products and advance learning engineering research. Aggregated, de-identified data may be made available to educational researchers and the broader research community.

Any research that associates interaction data with a specific course, institution, or student cohort is conducted only under an approved Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol, with appropriate informed consent and data governance in place.

4.  How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect only for the following purposes:

  • To create and manage your Alchemie account
  • To process subscription payments through Stripe
  • To generate accessible alt text descriptions for scientific figures you submit
  • To send transactional communications related to your account (e.g., receipts, service notices)
  • To identify and resolve bugs and quality issues in our products
  • To improve our products and advance learning engineering research using anonymous interaction data
  • To comply with applicable legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your information for advertising or marketing to third parties. We do not use student data for any purpose other than delivering our educational services.

5.  Third-Party Services

Alchemie uses a small number of carefully selected third-party services. Each is governed by its own privacy policy.

Firebase / Google Cloud Platform is used for account authentication and infrastucture hosting and shares email address for authenticiation and anonymous telemetry. Stripe is used for payment processing and shares billing information, governed entirely by Stripe's Privacy Policy. Antropric (Claude API) is used for AI-powered alt text generation for complex scientific figures and shares figure content only, no personal data, see Section 6. Content2Classroom (C2C) is the delivery platform for Alchemie Learning (student tool) and is governed by C2C's privacy terms and your institution's data agreement.

We do not share your personal information with any other third parties except as required by law.

6.  Artificial Intelligence

Alchemie uses artificial intelligence in one specific, limited way: to generate alternative text descriptions for complex scientific figures and structures submitted through Piph Author and our learning tools. This feature makes scientific content accessible to users who rely on screen readers.

How it works

When a scientific figure is submitted for alt text generation, the figure content is sent to the Anthropic Claude API. The API returns a text description, which is delivered to the user. The figure content is not retained by Anthropic after processing.

What we do not do

  • We do not include any personal information in AI requests
  • We do not use student data in connection with AI processing
  • We do not use AI for assessment, grading, or any consequential decision-making
  • We do not use AI for content personalization or user profiling

Per Anthropic’s API usage policy, inputs submitted via the API are not used to train or fine-tune Anthropic’s models. No personal or institutional data is embedded in or retained by the AI model.

AI-powered alt text generation is integral to the accessibility of Alchemie’s products and cannot be disabled, as it provides the core accessibility function for users who are blind or have low vision.

7.  FERPA & Student Data

Alchemie is committed to protecting student privacy in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and applicable state laws.

For our student-facing learning tools delivered through institutional platforms, Alchemie operates as a service provider to educational institutions. We do not directly control or have access to student education records. Student data is governed by the institution’s own FERPA policies and its agreement with our platform partner, Content2Classroom (C2C).

Alchemie does not use student data for any purpose beyond the delivery of educational services. We do not sell, share, or use student data for advertising, marketing, or any non-educational purpose.

We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to provide our services or as required by law.

  • Account data (email address): Retained for the duration of your account. Deleted within 30 days of account closure upon request.
  • Payment records: Retained by Stripe per their policies and applicable financial regulations.
